American Idol: A Weekly Review - Change is Not Always Better, Part Two

So, here I am, back to give my opinion on the boys of AI. I gave big ol' long spiel yesterday so I'll just get right into it today.

Andrew Garcia - Fav of the moment.
Andrew Garcia He sang 'Sugar We're Going Down' by Fall Out Boy. I like this guy. He switches it up and I think he can do it and pull it off. The judges didn't like how he changed this song, but I loved it. The vocals could've been better in some parts, but over all, I really liked it. Simon said he wasn't original enough [in this perf], I thought it was still plenty original. His rendition of 'Straight Up' was really great and because of that they have higher expectations for him, that could be a bad thing for him, but right now I'm loving him.

Alex Lambert - One of my favs for now.
Alex Lambert He sang 'Wonderful World' by James Morrison. Ok, I have to give props to this dude for two things. Number one for putting up with and not breaking because of Mary Powers. That chick was crazy diva way too soon. Number two he rocks the mullet. I'm not a fan of this particular hair style, as most people aren't, but that's all the more reason to give him props for doing it. I was so hoping (the whole time he was singing) that someone was going to bring it up, so I got excited when Ellen mentioned it...Moving on to the talent portion of my opinion. I thought his perf felt a little rushed. He has a good voice; I think he'd probably put out music that I would listen to. So, I hope he gets some confidence before next week and kills it on stage.

Casey James - Bird Chest.
Casey James He sang by 'Heaven' by Bryan Adams. I think he had the best perf of the night, but I have some strange aversion to him. I think it might be because I've seen his embarrassing bird chest plastered across my tv screen every episode since his first audition. Poor guy. That's rude of me, I know, but I can't help it. I just don't like the big "Kara is in love with him" bit. I just think that it has to be detrimental to him in some way, either in the competition or emotionally. That may sound dramatic, but whatever. I was glad when Ellen said that she was sorry for everything that was going on because it wasn't fair. I totally agree. Major props to him for going through his perf with all the shenanigans going on while he was singing. Ok, now I'm talking myself into liking him more. No matter my final opinion, he's great and will be sticking around for a good long while.

Aaron Kelly - Raw.
Aaron Kelly He sang 'Here Comes Goodbye' by Rascal Flatts. For being so young and this being the first live performance, I think he did really well. When I say 'raw', I'm referring to two things. First off, I think, like the judges, that he has natural, raw talent. I think he's good now, but he has a lot of potential. Also, when I say 'raw', I mean that during this perf (and this perf only) that his voice sounded...not timid, not weak, but shaky? There were places that sounded a little strained to me. Kind of like his throat was a little raw and he was pushing the sound out. However, I thought he did a great job during Hollywood week, despite forgetting the words for a beat. Not sure he'd sing music I'd listen to, but I think he might be around for a while.

Michael Lynche - Bouncy.
Michael Lynche He sang 'This Love' by Maroon 5. I was liking Michael all through HW week, but I'm not sure now. I think I still like him, I just didn't like his song choice. He didn't do bad exactly, I just wasn't very impressed. Not to mention that he was bouncing the entire time during the perf. Ellen was right when she said his personality was bursting out of him. I thought he must have to pee. He was about to explode! Either way, I think he'll be around a few more weeks, if for nothing else, because of his story. I really am routing for him to do better next week.

Todrick Hall - Cocky.
Todrick Hall He sang 'Since You Been Gone' by Kelly Clarkson. He changed it up, there's no denying that. You have to give him credit for trying to make it his own, but I didn't really like how he changed it. It was way different, too different. Also, I think he comes off as a little cocky, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I think maybe he should tone it down a bit, at least until he does something great. I can definitely see that he has worked in theater and I do love that. Adam Lambert came from theater and he's my favorite idol ever.

*EDIT* That's a false statement. In my uber-zealousness I neglected David Cook. I really love him too. Adam is a great performer (esp live, so much energy!) and I do love his music, but David is simply amazing the way he could make a song his own and be subtle about it. As much as I love Adam I think there are probably more songs of DC's that I love than there are AL's. I'm not sure, I've not sat down and counted them, yet. I still could. lol. Anyway, I'm off on a tangent. I love them both, differently. (ps. DD, please don't start plotting my demise.)

Tim Urban - Lucky.
Tim Urban He sang 'Apologize' by One Republic. This dude is lucky, plain and simple, for getting called back. I think he has a potentially good sounding voice. This, however, was a horrible song choice. He couldn't reach all the notes and it made me sad. I don't think he was the worst, though, and I'm just hoping that he does something good next week. On a happy note, though juvenile, he has great hair.

Lee Dewyze - Lacking.
Lee Dewyze He sang 'Chasing Cars' by Snow Patrol. I can't remember what I heard him sing before this perf and his rendition of 'You Found Me' in HW week, but I thought I liked him. Now I'm not so sure. I think the issue is that those are two songs that I really, really love. Like, really. I just didn't like how he sang them. Aside from that, I just thought he was off key or maybe just pitchy on the Snow Patrol song. Not to mention he didn't even say "chasing cars"...I know that's another petty judgment, but that's a really good part of the song, and they only say it once! Anyway, I do like the sound of his voice (when it's not pitchy) but I am not counting him out yet. After hearing the criticism they gave him this week, I'm excited to see what he does next week.

Jermaine Sellers -Forgettable.
Jermaine Sellers He sang 'Get Here' by Oleta Adams. I'm not feeling this guy. I liked his style this week, it was different. His perf, however, was a little pitchy. I think he has a good voice, but to me he doesn't sound unique. I am a fan of unique and original. However, I think he will be around a while because he can sing well.

John Park - Forgettable.
John Park He sang 'God Bless the Child.' I remember being surprised at the sound of his voice when he first started singing. He just doesn't look like he'd sing with that kind of voice. I didn't like his perf though. I can understand that he picked a song that means something to him, but that's not what this competition is about. He needs to sing to impress. Period. I think he has a good voice, but it was a terrible song choice.

Joe Munoz - Eliminated.
Joe Munoz He sang 'You and I Both' by Jason Mraz. I don't have much to say here. I didn't think he did all that bad on this perf. He seemed a little shaky while singing, but not awful. I'm not sad that he went home, though. I think he would've been in my bottom three guys this week, with John and Tyler being the others.

Tyler Grady - Eliminated.
Tyler Grady He sang 'American Woman.' I do not, did not, like him. I can appreciate that he loves the 70s and wants to live there, but it doesn't work. I'm sorry. His performance was way too karaoke for me. 'American Woman' is a big song, in my opinion, and he didn't rock it at all. I think it would've been better had he performed in his robe like he did for rehearsals. Maybe he'll have better luck once he gets back with his band, Wailing Waters.

Well, now you have my thoughts on the girls and the guys. I'd love to read your thoughts on who you like and dislike so drop a comment in the box down there.

My thoughts:

1) Does anyone but me think Andrew Garcia looks like a fluffier version of Danny Gokey?

2) I haven't watched the guys' show so I can't really comment on performances, seeing how I only caught the very, very end to see who was eliminated.

3) I'm glad Mr. 70s got eliminated. He looks like he should put a one piece mustard yellow rhinestoned bell bottom suit and sing back up for the Brady Bunch. And he didn't sing well.

4) I like David Cook too, so I shall not get too defensive. It's nice that we each have our faves and don't have to clone one (Randy and Jonathan Tayl(o/e)r) HOWEVER, I think if AL does what he should and comes out with a "rock" album next (thinkin WLL-ish), he may edge out DC as your fave, but who knows if that'll happen. He may go with what J calls "techno-gay" again.

5) I like Casey James and need to know what these shenanigans were, pronto!

6) I just can't see liking ANYBODY a super whole lot this year. We have been spoiled to people who can make songs their own and "kill it" all at the same time (AL, DC) and people who can plain sing and play piano (MG) *sigh*

7) I just don't like the number 6 and couldn't end there.

1) You're not the only one!

2) ...

3) ...

4) Oh, Randy and Jonathan. Sweet memories... and yes, I believe if AL did "rock" album, he could def surpass DC. OMG! I squee just thinking about the WLL perf! Seriously...I really hope for the sake of rock that he doesn't do another 'techno-gay' album next. Not that I don't like it, but I was all ready for an awesome rock album from him. ::sigh::

5) shenanigans have already been delivered.

6) ::gasp:: How could I not have mentioned the awesomesauce that is MG!?

7) I don't like odd numbers...

8) So I'm ending here. =)

ok shenanigans will have to be delivered to me also..lol

yay that Tyler is GONE! oh dear ..words cannot describe how much I didn't like him..

ok so Andrew is really good and is a total Danny Gokey lookalike...:D
his performance wasn't mind blowing though and I didn't know the song which didn't help, but I do think he has serious potential.

Alex is cute. not the strongest performers and the mullet has to go , but there's something about him that really make me hope he stays a long time.

Casey - I like him!!! he's kind of a prettier version of Bucky Covington in a way, but I do think he's a good singer..

Aaron - he was ok..didn't really impress me too much tbh.

Michael Lynch disappointed me a bit. I think he has the potential to do better..That song was a bit weak for his vocal abilities so I hope he does something with a bit more power next week.

Todrick - now here's where I'm going to disagree with you completely..Even my hubby ( who was just passing the door when he sang) thought he did really good. I loved that he switched it completely, and i think he pulled it off..but then again - the judges agreed with you and not me so......:)

Tim like you said was seriously lucky to stay in. I was sure he was a goner. but i kinda like him for some strange reason but i'll reserve judgement for another while.

Lee - boring!

Jermaine - awful!

John Park was okish..boring i guess, but 'watch this space' i reckon!

ok roll on friday night for round 2!

I think we mostly agree on all the guys at this point, except for Todrick. Maybe he'll change my mind though.

As for Alex's mullet, at least it's not an Ash mullet. haha.

I'm sending you shenanigans and the Fall Out Boy song just so that you can see the difference between the original and what Andrew did...to your FB.
