American Idol: A Weekly Review - Guys' Night

Wow. I wanted to have this done early this morning. (Not that there's anyone waiting tortuously for my thoughts, but still.) However, today my husband decided it was "Clean Out the House" day. And can you believe it? MY closet floor isn't the bottomless pit I've been lead to believe. It actually has a floor. Who knew!?

Anyway, on to the Idols...

First of all, I want to say that I hope Crystal B. is going to be ok. As far as I've read, they still don't know if she's going to perform tonight or not, or at least it's not been announced yet. Her health should definitely come first, but I this is such a huge opportunity and I'd hate to see her miss out because of health issues. I really hope she isn't eliminated if she's not able to perform.

Ok, moving on to the show from last night... I thought this week for the guys, as a whole, was a lot better than last week. Also, I've decided to give extra points for each contestant for certain little things. These points mean absolutely nothing other than me saying they get them. :P

I also want to say that this week I wrote out my thoughts as I watched and before the judges critiqued them so that I wouldn't let my opinions be swayed at all by them. My husband laughed at me...

Michael Lynche - Better.
Michael Lynche The night started out great with Michael singing James Brown's 'This is a Man's World.' When they announced that he'd be singing this song I must admit, I was a little worried because that is a very strong song. However, I was happy to see that he did well. I thought he looked really connected to the music and the lyrics as he sang and his vocals were on point. The only thing I can complain about is his 'lip theatrics.' Every time there was a pause in the words he'd pucker up his lips and it just happened too many times and I began to laugh. But! I thought he was really great. Points for doing curls (or whatever it's called) with Aaron Kelly.

John Park - Slightly Better.
John Park He sang 'Gravity' by John Mayer. I thought that this week he was just a tad better than last week, mostly just because he chose a current song. I still felt that his voice was strained and he just looked rather bored the whole time. I think that he would do better to stick with his group back home instead of trying to be a solo artist. He just doesn't have the emotion. He gets points for being bilingual, but I think I want him to be one of the two to go home this week. This is also my husband's pick.

Casey James - Worse.
Casey James With his rendition of Gavin Degraw's 'I Don't Want to Be' he reminded me of why he's not as great as Kara thinks/thought. He was still ok, but his vocals were a little off in places and he seemed out of breath some. Even though I thought he did worse this week than last, I still thought Kara was a little too harsh. I usually love Kara, but I get annoyed any time she's talking about him. I don't know why exactly. He gets major points for that guitar solo. Awesome. He also gets points for rebuilding his house. Although, I'm a little weary of someone who grew up without a tv, but like he said, it gave him time to practice. That must be my problem and lack of talent. I live television.

Alex Lambert - Better.
Alex Lambert He sang 'Everybody Knows' by John Legend and it was legit! I don't have much to say about his perf, but I love his voice. I think he did a lot better this week as far as being relaxed on stage. He didn't do so great with the high notes though. And I loved Simon's little pep talk afterward. I was surprised, Simon actually did that a good bit this show. Alex gets points for over sharing, because it makes me laugh. He also gets points for being a dork and making up his own language. Best of all, he gets points for playing the guitar. I think he ended up with the most points tonight.

Todrick Hall - Same.
Todrick Hall He sang 'What's Love Got to Do With It' by Tina Turner. First of all, I like that he picks songs to keep himself from being compared to the original artist. I think that's smart, but I still didn't like how he arranged this song. I felt distracted a bit by how he changed it. I didn't think his voice was very strong. I still maintain the opinion that he has a good voice. Just not this week. He doesn't get any points. :(

Jermaine Sellers - Slightly Better.
Jermaine Sellers He sang Marvin Gaye's 'What's Goin' On.' I don't have very much to say about him at all. I think his vocals were good, but he needs to get current. And his bit at the end "I know God!" What was that even about? I'm all for God, but he's not voting at the end of the night. Sorry, Jerm. However, he gets points for his onesie. I'm a little jealous of him for it. ;)

Andrew Garcia - Worse.
Andrew Garcia He saddened me this week, singing James Morrison's 'You Give Me Something.' I was sad that he gave up the guitar this week. He wasn't horrible, though. I thought he started off a little timid, but he got stronger about mid-way to the end. He gets points for breaking! I love watching people dance!

Aaron Kelly - Worse.
Aaron Kelly He sang 'My Girl' by the Temptations. This week, he seemed to be a lot more into it and not as... scared? I really didn't like the song choice though and he was pitchy major in some parts. Over all, good voice, bad song. He gets points for photograhpy! However, he looses a few for being lifted like a feather pillow by Big Mike.

Tim Urban - 100% Better.
Tim Urban He sang 'Come On Get Higher' by Matt Nathanson. I was so excited after this perf. He did so much better than last week. I was so happy for him. I still don't think he's the best, but I was glad he did great. Well, in my opinion, but that's what all this is. :) I love the tone of his voice too. I totally disagreed with Randy, Ellen, and Kara, but yay Simon! He gets points for the guitar. If you haven't noticed, I love me some guitar. And, yes, they are considered an accessory. :D  Sadly, this is my husband's second pick to go home this week.

Lee Dewyze - Lots Better.
Lee Dewyze He sang 'Lips of An Angel' by Hinder. This is another voice I love. I thought he did a lot better than last week, but lots of people thought he was great then too. I think he might've been the best of the night. I was sad, again, that he didn't have his guitar this week, but over all it didn't really matter. Simon gave him the self-esteem pep talk too, but I don't think he needs it. I like that he's more reserved and not cocky. I like to think of it as humbleness. I could be wrong, but that's what I'm going with. He didn't really have anything to get points for except that he just killed it.

***

I have a slight beef with the judges. When a person changes a song and doesn't kill it, they tell them to just sing - I get that. But then when someone sings a song really well and doesn't change it, they jump all over them for not changing it "because you're better than that." I believe they said that to Casey and Tim this week. The judges really need to make up their minds. Do they want people to change it up or not. Let's say, next week Todrick just sings a song the way it was written and does really well, are they then going to tell him he should've changed it up? Going by how they've done so far, that's exactly what should happen.

If you'll notice, I didn't have a second pick to go home. I couldn't decide. And I didn't proof read this. Hopefully if I made any mistakes you can still tell what I meant, then you can tease me in the comments. I'm slack.

Til tomorrow...
